Octopus Energy targets offering 100,000 homes with zero electricity bills by the year 2030

In a groundbreaking move, major UK developers Bellway, Vistry Group, and Persimmon have partnered with Octopus Energy to deliver 250 Zero Bills homes in a development in Bedfordshire. These homes are designed to potentially eliminate energy bills for 5 to 10 years, offering a much-needed solution for homeowners as energy prices continue to rise.

The Zero Bills homes scheme, primarily aimed at new-build properties, is part of a larger initiative to create a more energy-efficient environment. The homes will utilise technologies like solar panels, heat pumps, and smart energy management systems to generate and store the majority of their energy on-site, significantly reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the UK's environmental goals.

Each Zero Bills home receives 10 MWh of free electricity annually, enough to cover the energy requirements of a well-insulated three-bedroom house. Homeowners who exceed their free allocation will be billed for the extra energy, but the tariff is designed to minimise reliance on non-renewable sources.

The homes are equipped with an Octopus Energy-approved heat pump, solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and battery system that remain operational and well-maintained for the duration of the 10-year Zero Bills tariff. The Zero Bills tariff guarantees zero energy bills for 10 years, covering both electricity import and export, on the condition that the home meets all the eligibility criteria, including maintaining continuous internet connectivity and keeping approved system settings unchanged.

Octopus Energy is also working to retrofit older homes to meet the Zero Bills standard, with an estimated 500,000 homes built since 2013 potentially eligible for upgrades. The company aims to build 100,000 Zero Bills homes across the UK by 2030, a vision shared by Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, who envisions a future where greener living becomes the affordable option.

This initiative does not involve the use of traditional energy bills, aiming instead to provide homes that generate and store their own energy, removing the reliance on external energy suppliers. With the average UK household using approximately 14.2 MWh per year, Zero Bills homes consume around 6 MWh annually due to their highly efficient design.

As the UK strives to meet its environmental goals, Zero Bills homes offer a promising solution for homeowners seeking to reduce their carbon footprint while saving on energy costs. With the potential for 100,000 homeowners to live without energy bills by 2030, Octopus Energy's goal is to provide a brighter future where greener living is the cheaper option, not the premium.
