Nintendo's 20-year-old, $200 Cult Classic, a mainstay for GameCube collectors' long-term investments, is now available for modern play on the Switch platform.
In an exciting turn of events, the classic game Chibi-Robo is set to make a comeback, potentially sparking a full revival of the beloved series. Known for its quirky and surprisingly human characters, Chibi-Robo has cultivated a dedicated cult following since its initial release.
As part of the growing GameCube collection on the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, Chibi-Robo joins an esteemed lineup that includes The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, F-Zero GX, Super Mario Strikers, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Luigi's Mansion, among others. The library started with Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, and F-Zero GX at launch, followed by Super Mario Strikers and recently expanded with Chibi-Robo. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is also confirmed to join the collection.
Nintendo continues to announce additions periodically, expanding the GameCube game lineup accessible on the Switch 2 console. As of now, the total number of games in the Switch 2 GameCube library stands at five, with Chibi-Robo being the latest addition, added on August 21.
Developed by Skip, Chibi-Robo first made its appearance in 2005. Interestingly, the Wii version of the game was a re-release, only available in Japan. Since its last major release in 2015, the game has become quite a rarity, with complete copies frequently selling for over $200 on the secondhand market, as shown on market-tracking site PriceCharting.
In Chibi-Robo, players control a little robot that helps a family with various chores around the house. The game is set on the floorboards of a mostly ordinary home, offering a cozy concept that has endeared it to its fans.
The re-release of Chibi-Robo on the Switch 2 GameCube library provides an easy, legal way to play the game again. Subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online can access Chibi-Robo at no additional cost, as it is included in the subscription. The annual cost for Nintendo Switch Online is $50.
With Chibi-Robo's return, there's a growing hope that the series might see a resurgence, following its dormant period since the dismally dull 3DS platformer Chibi-Robo: Zip Lash in 2015. Only time will tell if this is the spark that ignites a full Chibi-Robo revival.
