New Study: Younger Consumers Demand Sustainable Packaging
A new study reveals a growing demand for sustainable packaging among younger consumers. Nearly half have bought products due to their post-consumer recycled content. The three-year study, conducted by Nova Chemicals, highlights the importance of recyclable packaging and materials sourced from recycling.
The study, spanning 2019 to 2021, surveyed around 1,200 U.S. and Canadian consumers annually. It found that those aged 44 and under prioritise recyclable packaging and materials derived from recycling. This age group also understands the performance attributes and value of plastic packaging.
Sanitation was deemed the most crucial aspect of plastic packaging, followed by recyclability, reusability, and recycled content. A 2020 survey showed that 40% of respondents believed the benefits of plastic packaging outweigh the risks, up from 30% in 2019. This shift in opinion was highlighted in a 2023 report by Allianz Verpackung und Umwelt (AVU), using data from the 'Verpackungsmonitor' by GVM Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung.
The pet food industry has been identified as having an opportunity to meet consumers' expectations for sustainable packaging. Younger consumers are driving this demand, with nearly half having made purchases based on recycled content. As understanding and appreciation for plastic packaging's benefits grow, the industry is encouraged to focus on recyclability and recycled materials.
