Neural network is being taken to court for alleged unauthorized use of copyrighted content by Disney and Universal.
Sneaky AI company under fire! Disney, Marvel, Universal, DreamWorks, and other film studios have filed a lawsuit against Midjourney, an AI image generator, accusing it of trying to rake in the dough from their decades-old investments in iconic characters and films. The accused allegedly uses countless copyrighted images to train its algorithm, enabling users to churn out pictures that eerily resemble beloved Disney and Universal characters.
In the lawsuit, Midjourney is branded as a copyright infringer and a plagiarism pit. Although the company remained silent when The New York Times reached out for comment, the paper reported the news.
This is the first time major Hollywood studios have confronted AI companies for copyright infringement, according to the Times. Kim Harris, chief legal officer of NBCUniversal, spoke out, saying, "Today we are filing this lawsuit to protect the creativity and hard work of our artists, as well as the investments we make in our content."
Disney and Universal are looking to collect damages from Midjourney, with the legal papers not revealing a specific monetary amount. On top of that, they want the court to order Midjourney to cease offering its future video service without adequate copyright safeguards.
