NATO Launches AUWB-MN Project to Revolutionize Underwater Operations

NATO has initiated a substantial project, the Allied Underwater Battlespace Mission Network (AUWB-MN), as part of its Digital Ocean and Antisubmarine Warfare Barrier Smart Defence Initiative. Supported by 12 nations, the project aims to modernize NATO's underwater operations and boost interoperability among allied forces.

Swedish defence and security company Saab has been chosen to spearhead this ambitious program. The project, slated to run for the next 12 months, is centered on developing a mission network for NATO's operations in the underwater battlespace. Mats Wicksell, head of Saab's business area Kockums, has affirmed this as the primary objective for the MANGROVE consortium, which Saab leads.

David Burton, Project Director for NATO's Antisubmarine Warfare Barrier initiative, has lauded the AUWB-MN project as a significant stride. He believes it will enable effective allied operations in the underwater domain of the future. NATO envisions the outcome of this program setting a new standard for underwater operations.

The Saab-led MANGROVE consortium commenced work on 1 September 2025. Its initial task is to design a Reference Architecture and a Test and Reference Environment for the mission network. This network will facilitate secure, rapid information exchange and combined operations above, on, and below the water. The project stands as a testament to NATO's commitment to bolstering its underwater capabilities and fostering interoperability among its member nations.
