Munster Chosen for Germany's Largest Battery Cell Research Factory
Munster has been selected to establish and operate Germany's largest battery cell research factory, the Battery Cell Research Factory (BCRF). The project, one of the country's most significant research undertakings, is set to receive substantial funding and support from various parties.
The BCRF is part of the BatteryCityMunster research hub, collaborating with the University of Munster's Battery Research Center MEET and other partners. The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space is backing the project with up to 500 million euros. The state of NRW is investing around 320 million euros in land and buildings.
The second phase of the project, BCRF Fab, spans 20,000 square meters and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten is responsible for the general planning of this phase, while Carpus + Partner AG and Riedel Bau AG are involved in the realization. Over 140 employees of the Fraunhofer Society are currently working in the FFB Prefab, testing serial production of new batteries.
The BCRF targets diverse industries such as automotive, energy, robotics, and aviation. With the unique battery cell production facility set to be developed in Munster by 2027, the city is poised to become a significant player in the global battery technology landscape.
