The world's first methanol-fueled container ship, the Laura Maersk, has made its debut journey, marking a significant step towards sustainable shipping. This 172-meter-long vessel, capable of carrying 2,136 twenty-foot containers (TEU), was delivered to Maersk in July 2025 and began its voyage from South Korea to Europe shortly after.

The Laura Maersk is a unique vessel, being the first methanol dual-fuel container vessel. It can operate on both methanol and traditional fuel, reflecting Maersk's commitment to green fuels and the decarbonization of its fleet. The ship made its first port call in Shanghai on July 7 as part of the AE3 route between East Asia and Northern Europe.

The naming ceremony of the Laura Maersk, held in Copenhagen on September 14, 2025, was attended by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, underscoring the ship's significance to EU climate goals. This event also highlighted the Laura Maersk as a milestone in Maersk’s plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

Maersk aims to transport at least 25% of its ocean cargo using green fuels such as methanol by 2030, aligning with broader EU ambitions for sustainable shipping and climate neutrality. The Laura Maersk symbolizes a larger industry trend towards innovation in sustainable shipping fuels, supported by European policy frameworks encouraging decarbonization.

The Laura Maersk's twice-weekly passage through the Kiel Canal is expected to have a positive impact on the region's economy, as it sails until the end of the year. This pioneering vessel is a testament to the EU's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry and is a strategic step towards a cleaner maritime transport future.
