Meta's demo model delivers an enhanced Meta Quest 3 experience, offering users a chance for a firsthand trial.
Meta Showcases Next-Generation VR Headset Prototypes at SIGGRAPH 2025
Meta, the tech giant behind the Oculus brand, has unveiled two cutting-edge VR headset prototypes, Tiramisu and Boba 3 (including Boba 3 VR), at the SIGGRAPH 2025 conference in Vancouver. These prototypes represent significant strides in resolution, field of view (FOV), brightness, and overall visual fidelity, promising a new era of immersive virtual reality experiences.
Tiramisu: Ultra-High Resolution and Pixel Density
Tiramisu, with its ultra-high resolution and pixel density, offers a central angular resolution of 90 pixels per degree (PPD). This is 3.6 times higher than the Meta Quest 3, approaching the human retina's resolution of approximately 60 PPD. Tiramisu also boasts an extreme peak brightness of 1,400 nits and a contrast ratio three times greater than the Quest 3, enabling hyperrealistic HDR imagery.
Powered by custom micro-OLED panels and Unreal Engine 5 visuals with NVIDIA DLSS 3 neural upscaling, Tiramisu delivers ultra-high-resolution VR visuals. However, its relatively narrow FOV of about 30 degrees on each axis results in a "virtual box" viewing experience.
Boba 3 and Boba 3 VR: Wide Field of View and Mass-Production Components
Boba 3 and Boba 3 VR, on the other hand, focus on massively expanding the FOV and resolution to better replicate natural human vision and mixed reality experiences. Both headsets offer an ultra-wide FOV of 180 degrees horizontal and 120 degrees vertical, approaching the human horizontal FOV of approximately 200 degrees.
Each eye in Boba 3 is equipped with a 4K by 4K display, surpassing the Quest 3's 2K by 1K per eye. The Boba 3 prototype also utilizes mass-production displays with high-curvature reflective polarizers and pancake lenses, making consumer adoption more plausible.
Boba 3 weighs around 840 grams, while Boba 3 VR is slightly lighter at 660 grams. This makes both headsets lighter than the Meta Quest 3 with an Elite strap.
Availability and Intent
It's important to note that these headsets are pure research prototypes, shown at SIGGRAPH 2025. Meta emphasizes that these prototypes demonstrate novel technologies that may never directly become consumer products but will influence the future of VR hardware design. There is no announced consumer release date or pricing for these technologies, which represent a direction for future innovation rather than ready-to-buy products.
Attending SIGGRAPH 2025 will give attendees the opportunity to demo these prototypes and witness firsthand the advancements in VR technology. For those interested in Boba 3, the only opportunity to try it out is at Siggraph, and it remains to be seen what Meta launches next in the VR headset market.
