SPD to stick to EU's 2035 combustion engine car ban - Merz Convenes Crucial Auto Summit to Debate EU's 2035 CO2 Emission-Free Car Deadline

Federal Chancellor Merz has convened a crucial auto summit at the Chancellery on Thursday, inviting key figures from politics, industry, and unions. The meeting aims to discuss the future of the automotive industry, with a focus on the EU's 2035 deadline for new cars to be CO2 emission-free, effectively phasing out combustion engines.

The EU's strict regulations have sparked debate, with some car manufacturers advocating for a relaxation or delay due to current economic challenges. Chancellor Merz intends to oppose the phase-out at the EU level, while the SPD remains committed to the 2035 deadline.

Merz's ministry, the BMWE, supports regional transformation networks like the Cluster Automotive Region Stuttgart 2.0 and e-mobil BW. These initiatives assist small and medium-sized enterprises in adapting to future technologies like electric drives, ensuring compliance with EU regulations. Many businesses have already begun investing in these future technologies.

IG Metall chair Christiane Benner advocates for a rapid ramp-up in electromobility but also calls for flexibility in CO2 emission rules. Schneider believes that relying on older combustion engine technology is not a viable solution. Merz, however, argues that diesel engines are still necessary in the truck sector and banning the technology would be a mistake.
