Explore and Hear: The U17 Submarine is Now Available for All! - Marvel at and Hear the U17 Submarine: Access Now Available

The decommissioned naval submarine U-17, a 48-meter long, 350-tonne vessel once in service from 1973 to 2010, is now open for public exploration at the Technik Museum Sinsheim. It has been meticulously prepared for visitors to get an authentic submarine experience, according to the museum director.

Tourists can peruse the torpedo tubes, peer through the periscope, and listen to the sounds of a real submarine. Andreas Hemmer, the museum director, expects the visit to feel like being underwater.

Upon its residence in Eckernförde on the Baltic Sea, the vessel embarked on an intricate journey two years ago. A portal crane lifted it onto a floating barge in Kiel, then stopped in Speyer, Palatinate before finally arriving in Sinsheim in July 2024. The entire project cost around €2 million, mostly funded by donations.

Museum-goers, tech enthusiasts, submarine aficionados, or families with children will find the U-17's exploration worthwhile. The Technik Museum Sinsheim is already a popular destination with classic cars, planes, an eatery, a café, and a large playground for kids.

The U-17 is unique compared to other museum submarines in Germany. As the only remaining member of its class and the most modern, it offers an unparalleled immersive experience [1][5]. Its transport story involved impressive logistical challenges and innovations, setting a precedent for future relocations of such vast artifacts[1].

The museum plans regular events, such as talks by former U-boat crew members, to further enrich visitors' understanding of the submarine's history and operational aspects [1]. As one of the most substantial submarines on display, the U-17 promises an unforgettable experience at the Technik Museum Sinsheim.
