In Rhineland-Palatinate, residents have the opportunity to participate in a nationwide mobile network measurement week, spearheaded by the Federal Network Agency. This initiative aims to evaluate the current status of mobile network coverage across the region, with measurements running from May 26 to June 1, 2025.
By using a smartphone and the app provided by the Federal Network Agency, individuals can contribute valuable data to improve the quality of mobile network coverage. These real-world measurements will better represent the user experience compared to the officially reported figures provided by telecommunications companies.
The mobile network measurement week is a grassroots effort to capture authentic data, as explained by Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Digitization, Dörte Schall (SPD). Last year, over 2,800 participants provided nearly 1.6 million valid measurement points in Rhineland-Palatinate, revealing 4G, 5G, 2G, and dead zones across the region.
This user-centric data collection is set to add a valuable layer to the Federal Network Agency’s dead zone map and the Gigabit Land Registry, enhancing the identification of connectivity gaps. The results will provide a detailed, real-world assessment of mobile connectivity, complementing existing operator-based maps and databases.
The current status of mobile network coverage in Rhineland-Palatinate is undergoing evaluation following previous regional campaigns in 2023 and 2024. Recent efforts by network operators, such as Vodafone's temporary mobile base station at the Rhineland-Palatinate Day in Neustadt/Weinstraße, demonstrate ongoing efforts to improve local coverage, especially during large public gatherings.
Detailed results from this nationwide campaign are in the process of being compiled and analyzed. These will provide a more accurate, up-to-date picture of mobile network performance across the state, offering valuable insights into areas with poor coverage or dead zones.
- The participatory nature of the mobile network measurement week, which involves residents using a smartphone app to contribute data, is aimed at reflecting the user lifestyle and the impact of technology on grassroots activities, such as vocational training and general-news access, within the community.
- As part of the ongoing initiative for improving mobile network coverage, residents' data collected through the mobile network measurement week will be used to supplement existing maps and databases, providing a more comprehensive view that can aid in the development of vocational training programs tailored to meet the requirements of the modern, technology-driven society in Rhineland-Palatinate.
