Live baseball coverage secured by Audacy with Tieline technology selected
In the world of professional radio broadcasting, the Tieline Bridge-IT XTRA II codec has emerged as a reliable choice for remote broadcasts and contribution links. This high-quality audio codec, recently installed in Petco Park's broadcast booth by Audacy, offers several key features and advantages.
The superior audio quality of the Bridge-IT XTRA II is evident in its ability to transmit low-latency, high-fidelity audio over IP networks, often using AES67 and other professional audio standards. This ensures crystal-clear sound for listeners, even in challenging network conditions.
Robust connectivity is another strength of the Bridge-IT XTRA II. It offers multiple IP interfaces, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular bonding, to ensure reliable connectivity. The codec also supports bonded cellular streaming, which allows multiple 4G/5G connections to be combined, increasing reliability and bandwidth for live remote broadcasts.
Ease of integration is a significant advantage of the Bridge-IT XTRA II. It is compatible with many broadcast consoles and automation systems, supporting standard audio protocols. The intuitive user interface provides web-based control and monitoring, facilitating remote management. Advanced audio processing features, such as noise reduction, echo cancellation, and forward error correction, further maintain signal quality.
Looking ahead, potential future expansions for the codec and similar devices in radio broadcasting could include enhanced IP network adaptation for better handling of emerging 5G and beyond wireless technologies. Cloud integration could enable direct connection to cloud-based radio automation and streaming platforms. AI-driven audio enhancement could optimize audio quality in real-time, while expanded multi-codec support could provide improved compression efficiency and audio fidelity. Broader interoperability with networked audio equipment using protocols like AES67, RAVENNA, and Dante could also be on the horizon, enhancing flexible broadcast workflows.
Audacy's 97.3 KWFN(FM) in San Diego, the San Diego Padres' flagship station, has already experienced the benefits of the Bridge-IT XTRA II. Bill Eisenhamer, the chief engineer of Audacy's five FM station San Diego cluster, values the ease of use, installation, and remote access of the codec. The station cluster uses approximately 24 Tieline codecs, six of which are ViAs.
The Padres' network, which includes affiliates in Temecula, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas, also uses Tieline Gateways for inter-studio links and sports-related feeds. The studio Gateway has two independent Internet Service Providers (ISPs), with one of its NICs being internal. The setup is appreciated for its accessibility, with menu access available on the Bridge-IT XTRA II's front panel.
Audacy San Diego also uses Tieline's Cloud Codec Controller for remote codec management. Eisenhamer, who believes that flexibility and reliability are critical, has tested a Gateway using a Dante module and sees potential for future implementation. The network sends mono program and IFB communications on one channel of the stereo return, while the second channel is a produced play-by-play feed routed to the Petco Park control room.
As we move towards the 2025 MLB season, it is clear that the Tieline Bridge-IT XTRA II codec will continue to play a significant role in professional radio broadcasting, offering superior audio quality, robust connectivity, and ease of integration. For detailed technical specifications or the latest firmware updates, it is recommended to refer to the official Tieline website or contact their support directly.
