LegalOn Expands AI Capabilities and Secures $50 Million Series E Funding

In a significant move, LegalOn Technologies, a pioneering startup based in Tokyo and San Francisco, has announced its expansion into matter management and secured a $50 million Series E funding round led by Goldman Sachs Growth Equity. This latest development positions LegalOn as a leading player in the AI-driven legal technology sector, aiming to automate tedious legal work and enhance strategic legal team efficiency globally.

Expansion into Matter Management

LegalOn's expansion into matter management, introduced in July 2025, broadens its AI capabilities beyond contract review. This new capability enables legal teams to intake legal requests through email, Slack, or web forms, assign tasks, track progress, and maintain audit trails. By covering more legal workflow management aspects, LegalOn is set to offer a comprehensive solution for streamlining legal operations.

Series E Funding Round

The Series E funding round also attracted participation from existing investors such as World Innovation Lab, Mori Hamada, Mizuho Bank, and Shoko Chukin Bank. The funding aims to accelerate agentic AI product development, sales, and marketing efforts as LegalOn rapidly grows its global presence, now serving over 7,000 customers with 4x business growth in the US and UK in the past year.

Strategic Partnership with OpenAI

In addition to the funding, LegalOn also announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. This collaboration enables LegalOn to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and API with LegalOn’s proprietary legal domain expertise and data. By leveraging advanced AI models, LegalOn aims to develop advanced legal AI agents, aiming to redefine corporate legal workflows and streamline legal operations further.

Investment from Masayoshi Son and Neil Shen

Notable investors in LegalOn's Series D round in 2022 included Masayoshi Son, a Japanese billionaire, and Neil Shen, a billionaire who invested through his venture capital firm HongShan Capital (formerly Sequoia China).

LegalOn's AI-Powered Contract Review Tool

LegalOn's AI-powered contract review tool can identify legal risks, rank them by severity, and make suggestions based on more than 50 attorney-drafted guidelines. This tool, combined with the company's new matter management capabilities, positions LegalOn as a comprehensive solution for legal workflow automation.

Forbes, known for its rigorous editorial standards, has published several articles about LegalOn's developments, including "Why OpenAI And Google Are Betting On This AI Unicorn With A $100 Million Deal" and "South Korea's LG Launches 'Hybrid Reasoning' AI Model". Forbes also provides a platform for sharing confidential information about these investments and partnerships.

In a separate development, San Francisco-headquartered Harvey AI joined the unicorn club after raising $100 million in a Series C round. Investors in Harvey AI's round included Google Ventures, OpenAI, Kleiner Perkins, and Sequoia Capital. Japanese chip packaging giant Kyocera also launched a $100 million startup fund in an unrelated announcement.

These moves by LegalOn and other AI-focused startups in the legal industry are set to revolutionize the sector, making legal work more efficient and less prone to errors. With its latest expansion and funding, LegalOn is poised to lead this revolution, offering a comprehensive solution for legal workflow management.
