Introduction of the Initial Hardware-Free PIN-Based Mobile Point-of-Sale (mPOS) System Developed for the Android Platform

In a groundbreaking development, the collaboration between Rubean, CCV, Intertrust, and Riscure has resulted in the creation of PhonePOS - a contactless payment application for Android handsets. The solution, set to launch first in Germany and then roll out across Europe, promises to revolutionise card payments for millions of merchants.

By utilising Android smartphones for card acceptance, PhonePOS offers a safe and convenient way for merchants to accept payments from anywhere. The benefits of POS integration, as highlighted by Günther Froschermeier, CTO of CCV Germany, are undeniable.

The new tap-on-phone system will be deployed through European-based acquiring banks and also offered as a service through CCV. Riscure provided sophisticated penetration testing and certification for the PhonePOS solution, ensuring its security.

Rubean's security and monitoring software, suitable for a smartphone-based card terminal, is a key component of PhonePOS. The application transforms Android handsets into contactless payment terminals, supporting PIN entry with no additional hardware.

Intertrust's whiteCryption solutions are used to protect the encryption keys and provide application hardening in PhonePOS. The development of PhonePOS required a significant technical team effort, as stated by Bill Horne, general manager of the Secure Systems product group at Intertrust.

Tim Hartog, Director of Mobile Payments at Riscure, emphasises the importance of security in using smartphones as payment terminals. The PhonePOS solution makes optimal use of best-in-class software security, including secure PIN-entry through hardware-backed TEE technology.

PhonePOS is developed to PCI CPoC standards and certified to Visa and Mastercard brand pilot-programs. The lightweight app, which deploys most parts of the POS functionality to the cloud, offers increased security and flexibility.

In addition to Android handsets, PhonePOS is also being tested for deployment onto professional retail tablets with full terminal-management capabilities, extending support to larger retailers. This development brings card acceptance and enhanced business opportunities to millions of micro-merchants.

Froschermeier considers PhonePOS an important breakthrough for electronic payments, and the partnership between the four companies has delivered streamlined payment capabilities to the market. The European-based credit institutions providing the PhonePOS payment connection are yet to be specified. However, with its innovative approach and robust security measures, PhonePOS is set to redefine the landscape of card payments in Europe.
