Internet Coinages: Latest Innovations in Online Language
In the ever-evolving world of the internet, words from memes and social media are increasingly becoming part of our official vocabulary. This shift is blurring the lines between "joke" and "norm".
One such word that has gained popularity is "Skibidi". Originally associated with an animated series of the same name, Skibidi is now commonly used by teenagers to intensify statements, meaning "cool" or "bad". The term has also been linked to a remix of a song by Bulgarian performer Biser King Dom Dom Yes Yes.
Another intriguing term is "Tradwife". An abbreviation for "traditional wife", Tradwife refers to women, mostly bloggers, who promote "old-school" values such as caring for the home, husband, and children on social media, particularly on TikTok.
Internet slang isn't limited to these terms. "Delulu", an abbreviation of "delusional", originated in the Korean pop culture community and is now used on TikTok and other platforms to denote a tendency to believe in illusions and choose subjective fantasies over reality.
The term "Skibidi rizz" and "Labubu rizz" are examples of how "skibidi" and "Labubu" can be used to mean either praise or mockery. "Skibidi rizz" implies something is cool or bad in a positive sense, while "Labubu rizz" refers to something that is cute yet strange.
"Labubu" is a character from designer vinyl figures by the Hong Kong brand POP MART, created by artist Kasing Lung. It has become a cult object among teenagers and collectors, and a symbol of something cute, strange, or slightly eerie in internet memes. The word "Labubu" originates from a plush toy figure created by Kasing Lung in 2015 for his children's book series The Monsters, inspired by Nordic myths.
The internet's influence on language isn't just about trends. A small group of influential and wealthy men in the IT sphere, known as the "Broligarchy", seek political influence. This combination of "bro" and "oligarchy" reflects the male-dominated nature of the IT industry.
It's worth noting that new words are only included in dictionaries when there's confidence that they will stick around for a long time. For instance, the Cambridge Dictionary officially included a range of meme terms born from internet culture in its 2025 update, including delulu, skibidi, and tradwife.
Lastly, the concept of a "work spouse" or "working spouse" refers to a colleague with whom a person develops trusting and almost familial relationships at work, without romance, but with constant support.
As the internet continues to evolve, so does our language. Stay tuned for more updates on this fascinating intersection of culture and communication.
