Instagram Introduces Map Feature, Repost Function, and Friends Section: Here's a Lowdown
Meta, Instagram's parent company, has recently announced a series of updates aimed at enhancing user interaction and privacy control on the platform. Here's a breakdown of the new features:
Reposts
Instagram now offers a built-in repost feature, enabling users to share public feed posts and Reels with their followers. To repost, simply update to the latest Instagram app, then tap the repost icon below any public post or alongside the like/comment/share buttons on Reels. You can add an optional comment on the repost before saving.
Reposted content appears in your followers’ feeds and in a new Reposts tab on your profile located between the Reels and Tagged Photos tabs. Original creators are credited on reposted posts. You can undo a repost by holding the reposted thumbnail and selecting Delete Repost or simply tapping the repost button again.
It's important to note that only public posts can be reposted; private accounts do not allow reposting as their repost button is disabled for their content.
Location Sharing (Instagram Map / Friend Map)
Instagram has introduced a location-sharing feature called Instagram Map (or Friend Map) where users can optionally share their last active location with friends. This feature is opt-in only; users must explicitly enable it.
You can control exactly who sees your location by choosing specific friends or groups, and you can exclude certain places or people from location sharing. The map also shows location-tagged public content from creators, allowing users to explore content geographically.
The location shared is the last active location rather than a constant live location, addressing privacy concerns.
Friends Tab in Reels
Instagram has added a Friends tab at the top of the Reels interface. This tab shows public content that your friends have interacted with (liked, commented on, or reposted). It allows users to discover reels popular among their social circle without direct content resharing. Since it features public content only, it respects private and restricted content boundaries by not showing those posts here automatically.
Privacy Settings
Here's a summary of the privacy settings for each feature:
| Feature | Privacy Controls | Notes | |------------------|-----------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------------------| | Reposts | Only public content can be reposted; creators can disable reposts | Reposts credit original creators; undo option available | | Location Sharing | Opt-in only; share last active location with selected friends/groups with exclusions | Not live location; fully controllable by user | | Friends Tab (Reels) | Shows only public content friends interact with | No private or restricted content shown |
These features aim to enhance sharing and connection while providing clear user control over privacy and content visibility.
The Friends tab began rolling out earlier this year and can be found at the top of the Reels tab. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, provided a more detailed explanation of the new map feature on his account.
Location sharing on the new Instagram map can only be shared with a limited group of people chosen by the user. Parents with Instagram supervision for their teens have control over their teens' location sharing experience on the map. When users share their location in stories, it will appear on the location map for 24 hours.
Meta also announced that parents will receive a notification if their teen starts sharing their location, allowing for important conversations about safe sharing. Location sharing on the new Instagram map is completely off by default.
In addition, Meta provided the option to hide one’s own likes and comments on Reels, and to mute activity bubbles from specific people followed. These updates aim to provide users with more control over their Instagram experience while fostering a sense of community and connections.
- To further engage users and facilitate content discovery, Meta, through Instagram, has implemented a Friends tab in Reels, which showcases public content that friends have interacted with on the platform.
- Social-media platforms have always played a significant role in entertainment, and now with Meta's new feature, location sharing (Instagram Map / Friend Map), users can share their last active location with friends to build a stronger sense of community, thus adding another layer of entertainment and interaction on the platform.
