Hyundai and Toyota Dominate U.S. Green Car Market with 10 Top Models
Hyundai and Toyota lead the U.S. market in environmentally-friendly cars, with 10 of the top 12 models. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's (ACEEE) GreenerCars ratings for 2024 show a dominance of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, with affordability being a key factor.
Hyundai Motor Group and Toyota Motor Corp. have emerged as leaders in producing eco-friendly vehicles in the U.S. They account for 10 out of the 12 highest-scoring vehicles in the ACEEE's latest ratings. Other manufacturers, such as Chrysler with its Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid minivan and BMW with its sustainable models like the i Vision Circular concept, also made the list.
Peter Huether, a senior transportation research associate at ACEEE, stressed the importance of expanding affordable electric vehicle (EV) options to cater to a wider range of incomes. More than half of the 'greenest' vehicles have a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) below $35,000. Notably, no internal-combustion-engine cars made the top 12 list. The dominance of EVs and hybrids is clear, with seven out of the 12 highest-scoring vehicles being EVs, two being plug-in hybrids, and four being conventional hybrids.
The ACEEE's GreenerCars ratings for 2024 highlight the growing trend towards electric and hybrid vehicles in the U.S. market. Hyundai and Toyota are at the forefront of this shift, with a wide range of affordable, environmentally-friendly options available to consumers.
