Gunmen Attack Nigerian Seminary, Kill Officer, Abduct 3 Students
Gunmen struck the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Edo state, Nigeria, on July 10, leaving one security officer dead and three seminarians abducted. Bishop Gabriel Dunia of Auchi has expressed frustration at the lack of protection and appealed for solidarity to combat regional insecurity.
The attack claimed the life of Christopher Aweneghieme, a member of the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps. Three seminarians, aged between 14 and 17, were taken captive and remain in the hands of the assailants. The entire seminary community has been evacuated for safety, with the remaining students temporarily relocated. Bishop Dunia has reached out to the Nigerian police for support and is in contact with the assailants through mediators, though paying a high ransom is not feasible due to poverty and church policy.
The Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary has been a beacon of hope for the local Catholic community, training over 500 students for the priesthood. Bishop Dunia has called upon all priests in the diocese to pray for divine protection throughout Edo state and Nigeria. Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) has joined the Diocese of Auchi in condemning the attack and mourning the loss of the security officer, while praying for the release of the seminarians.
The bishop's emotional appeal for solidarity highlights the urgent need to contain insecurity in the region. The Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary remains a symbol of hope, and its community eagerly awaits the safe return of the abducted seminarians.
