Google Introduces Search Live: Ask About Your Surroundings Hands-Free
Google has introduced Search Live, a new feature that lets users ask questions about their surroundings using the Google app or Google Lens. This innovative tool is now available in English in the United States.
Search Live brings real-time, camera-aware conversations to both Android and iOS devices. Users can tap the new 'Live' icon in the Google app or open Google Lens and select 'Live' to start an interactive voice conversation that can also see what the camera sees.
The feature shifts queries from typed text to camera and voice, providing answers while users are actively engaged in tasks. Google highlights practical use cases such as hands-free trip planning, quick how-to guidance, and real-time troubleshooting. For instance, users can point their camera at a restaurant to ask about its opening hours or at a product to find out more about it.
In Lens, camera sharing is on by default, allowing users to immediately ask questions about what is in front of them. Google has rolled out Search Live in the United States, with no near-term availability scheduled for Germany or the European Union due to technical and infrastructure challenges. Local businesses are advised to keep storefront photos, product imagery, and key details current as people can now point, ask, and get links in real time.
Rajan Patel, VP of Engineering for Search at Google, announced the launch of Search Live on X. This new feature brings a more intuitive and hands-free way to search, making it easier for users to find information about their surroundings. As the tool rolls out, businesses should ensure their online presence is up-to-date to take full advantage of this real-time search capability.
