Google introduces option to select 'Preferred Sources' for Top Stories listing

Google is rolling out a new feature that allows users in the US and India to set Preferred Sources for a more personalized Top Stories carousel. This means you can now specify your favourite websites to appear more frequently in Google Search Top Stories when they publish fresh and relevant content for your search.

How to Set Preferred Sources

  1. Start by searching for a current news topic on Google that triggers the Top Stories section.
  2. Look for the icon (a Cards Star) to the right of the “Top Stories” label.
  3. Click this icon to open a menu where you can select your preferred news outlets from a list, including major publications and local blogs.
  4. After selecting your favourites, refresh the search results to see more articles from these chosen sources prominently displayed in Top Stories.
  5. You can select multiple preferred sources, adjust your choices anytime, and see content from these sources in a dedicated “From your sources” section within the Top Stories box.

Personalizing Your News Feed

This feature helps personalize your news feed by prioritizing articles from your handpicked outlets when they publish relevant content. Google still shows some news from other sources to keep variety and coverage broad, but your chosen publishers will feature more prominently based on your preferences.

Preferred sources will be badged with a star icon next to the publication name at the bottom of the card. This feature is currently available in English in both the US and India.

Choosing Your Preferred Sources

Google has found that over half of users choosing Preferred Sources select four or more sources. If you have a favourite local news outlet or sports blog, you can now ensure their content appears more frequently in your Google Search Top Stories.

Google provides resources for publishers to encourage their followers and subscribers to select their website as a preferred source on Google in a dedicated help center.

This new feature is part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve the user experience and provide more personalized and relevant content to its users.
