Gig Economy Booms: 30 Million New Workers Expected, Kenya Leads Africa

The gig economy is thriving, with an anticipated 30 million new workers joining in the next year. Spain has seen a significant 39% increase in its global freelance market share over five years. In Africa, Kenya leads with a 0.37% share, followed by Nigeria at 0.27% and South Africa at 0.17%.

The growth in the online gig economy has been particularly robust in countries like India, the Philippines, Kenya, and Nigeria. In Kenya, 31% of online workers turn to gig work due to lack of formal employment, while 21% prefer it for convenience and flexibility. Despite an 8% decline in remote freelancing, the U.S. remains the global leader in the gig economy.

The country has experienced a remarkable 216% growth in online freelancers over the past five years. While South Africa has seen a more modest 9% growth, Nigeria has witnessed an impressive 130% increase in its online freelancing workforce.

The gig economy's expansion shows no signs of slowing, with significant growth expected in the coming year. While Spain has made notable strides, African countries like Kenya and Nigeria are also experiencing substantial growth in their online freelancing workforces.
