German Regional Publishers Boost Digital Revenues Beyond E-Papers
Regional publishing houses in Germany are increasingly relying on digital revenues. In 2023, prominent groups like Freie Presse Mediengruppe, RHEINPFALZ Verlag, and VRM derived an average of 12.4% of their earnings from digital sources. Meanwhile, NOZ and sh:z have fully funded their editorial departments through digital means.
E-Papers, while popular among older readers, are considered a transitional technology. They currently contribute significantly to NOZ's digital revenues, but are not as reliable as Plus subscriptions. NOZ, employing around 480 editorial and technical staff with annual personnel costs of 41 to 43 million euros, finds E-Papers to be a crucial but not sole source of digital revenue.
Across Germany, regional publishers generated 6.4% of their revenues from E-Papers alone in 2023. NOZ Medien Holding, with a 2023 turnover of 207.9 million euros and a projected similar size for 2024, achieved a digital quota of around 20 percent. This indicates a growing trend towards digital revenues, with E-Papers playing a role, albeit a diminishing one.
Regional publishers in Germany are shifting towards digital revenues, with an average of 12.4% in 2023. E-Papers, while significant, are not the primary driver of this shift. NOZ's future digital revenues are more dependent on Plus models and advertising, with E-Papers serving as a bridge to more sustainable digital revenue sources.
