Garmin Rolls Out Major Software Update for Fenix 8 Adventure Watch

Garmin has announced a significant software update for its Fenix 8 adventure watch, enhancing its features and strengthening its position at the top of the outdoor watch market. As of writing, system software version 17.28 is being rolled out to around 20% of Fenix 8 users, with wider availability expected in the coming days and weeks.

The update introduces a host of new features, starting with the Mobility workout mode, designed for users seeking to improve their overall fitness and mobility. Additionally, runners using a compatible heart rate monitor can now take advantage of the Running Economy feature, which analyzes running efficiency by combining stride length, heart rate, pace, and a new metric called Step Speed Loss.

Navigating the Fenix 8 has become even easier with the addition of a swipe-left app list access, first seen on the Venu X1, allowing for faster and more intuitive activity access. The navigation and outdoor tools have also been updated, featuring storm alerts, touch-access keyboard menus, and sailing-specific features like a Tack Assist data page and race timer tweaks.

For multisport athletes, the update includes a Projected Race Time feature and a Suggested Finish Line estimate, providing valuable insights during training and competition. The Triathlon Coach, offering race-specific guidance across swim, bike, and run disciplines, is also part of the update.

Strength training enthusiasts will appreciate the addition of a rest countdown timer to help manage intervals more precisely, and the ability to edit previous sets in strength training exercises. The update also refines Move Alert 2.0, nudging users more effectively after prolonged inactivity.

The Fenix 8 now offers an emoji keyboard, expanded QWERTY layouts, and a Japanese Kana keyboard in the interface, making communication more fun and convenient. Furthermore, the watch now includes a new Resting Heart Rate Insight Widget for tracking baseline health trends and a smarter Evening Report to complement the existing Morning Report, offering end-of-day context on recovery and sleep readiness.

Lastly, the update introduces a Smart Wake alarm that aims to wake the user in the lightest sleep stage within a set time window. It is unclear if all features will also be available on the Enduro 3, Tactix 8, or Quatix 8, but similar updates are likely in the future.

The Garmin Epix (Gen 2) and Garmin Fenix 7 series may also receive the changes introduced with system software version 17.28, ensuring that Garmin's entire line of premium outdoor watches remains at the forefront of technology.
