In the present digital age, AI is revolutionizing healthcare, boosting productivity, and streamlining administrative tasks. However, it's not all sunshine and roses; AI has become a double-edged sword, also empowering cybercriminals to orchestrate highly sophisticated and targeted phishing attacks. According to FBI's latest warning, these bad actors are employing AI to craft convincing phishing emails or even impersonate co-workers or family members using AI-powered voice and video cloning [1].
The success rate of such attacks is alarming. A whopping 80% of security leaders admit their organizations have become victims of phishing emails penned by AI [2]. With IT leaders on high alert, it's crucial for healthcare organizations to understand this new phishing threat landscape to protect their valuable data.
The New Face of Phishing Attacks
"Phishing is all about manipulating human psychology and biases," said Fredrik Heiding, a Ph.D. research fellow at Harvard University, during last year's Black Hat USA conference [3]. Traditionally, phishing emails have been riddled with poor grammar and lingual errors, making them easy to spot for many. But with the birth of AI tools like ChatGPT, creating flawless text in multiple languages at lightning speed, those red flags are becoming obsolete [4].

Threat actors are swiftly leveraging this technology to craft new phishing emails at an unprecedented pace. By automating the phishing email creation process, attackers can save almost two days of manual work—time that can be invested in launching more attacks [6]. This efficiency and personalization afforded by AI mean attackers can launch widespread, rapid phishing campaigns targeting multiple victims with greater success.
The odds are against us: 98% worry about AI-driven cyber threats
As AI technology continues to progress, 98% of senior cybersecurity executives are growing increasingly concerned about the cybersecurity risks posed by AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini (formerly Bard) [6]. However, the solution lies not in fear but in adopting AI to fortify defenses against AI-generated attacks.
Protecting against the AI-generator phishing threat
As phishing email attacks evolve, healthcare security leaders must up their defense game. According to a recent study, over half of IT organizations rely on their cloud email providers and legacy tools for security [7]. While these protective measures help, they may not be enough to deter AI-generated attacks.
The best defense against AI-enabled phishing attacks is AI itself. Implementing AI for email security offers three key benefits: improved threat detection, enhanced threat intelligence, and a speedier incident response [8]. AI can identify phishing content using behavioral analysis, natural language processing, attachment analysis, malicious URL detection, threat intelligence, and incident response.
In addition to AI security defenses, businesses should invest in continuous employee training. Educating employees about the telltale signs of AI-generated phishing attacks and the importance of maintaining skepticism can significantly reduce the chances of human error [9].
