Expansion of Leipzig Tram Network Costs Over 1 Billion Euros
Linz, the second-largest city in Austria, has announced a delay in the final phase of its tram network renovation. The project, known as the Regional-Stadtbahn Linz, was initially planned to be completed by 2030, but will now be finished in 2037.
The city, in coordination with the federal state of Upper Austria and the federal government of Austria, has planned a significant investment of over a billion euros in the final phase of the renovation. This phase will focus on the construction of new, larger trams with increased capacity and the renovation of the entire track network to accommodate these larger vehicles.
The works on track widening are currently underway, but have taken significantly longer than planned. The city attributes this delay to the complexity of the project and the need for meticulous planning and execution.
The final phase of the tram network renovation aims to make the system more efficient, with the city's ultimate goal being to improve the overall transportation infrastructure in Linz.
The delay in the final phase of the project is partially due to the much larger and costlier 'Second Stammstrecke' metro tunnel project in Munich, Germany. This project, which faces increased cost estimates and extensive planning and construction challenges, including route changes and safety concept revisions, has caused a ripple effect on the Linz tram network renovation.
Despite the delay, the city remains committed to the project and is optimistic about the benefits it will bring to the residents of Linz. The investment in the tram network is part of a larger effort to modernise and improve the city's transportation infrastructure, making it more efficient and sustainable for the future.
