Expands global Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities: Viasat introduces IoT Nano technology
Viasat has launched its next-generation IoT Nano connectivity service, offering a significant improvement in performance and cost-efficiency for global IoT applications, particularly in remote areas. Powered by ORBCOMM's OGx technology, the service provides faster data speeds, larger message capacity, and lower power consumption compared to its predecessor.
Andy Kessler, Vice President of Enterprise and Land Mobile at Viasat, stated that IoT Nano offers flexible, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT connectivity to businesses in remote areas. The service optimises power usage, leading to smaller and cheaper solar panels, batteries, and enclosures.
The new service expands Viasat's diverse portfolio of IoT connectivity services, including ultra-low data rate narrowband IoT services and static VSAT IoT offerings. It utilises Viasat's L-band satellite network to provide near-real-time asset tracking with global, weather-resilient coverage boasting 99.5% uptime.
IoT Nano will continue to support IDP mode, preserving existing customer investments in IDP while enhancing capabilities for reduced power consumption, larger messages, and faster speeds in OGx mode. This approach allows OEMs and IoT solution providers to develop hardware that supports a wide variety of IoT applications with varying data requirements.
OGx, backed by ORBCOMM's proven terminals, network, and field support, delivers faster speeds, larger messages, and lower power usage. Dave Roscoe, Satellite IoT President at ORBCOMM, stated that OGx makes it possible for partners to enter new markets, expand use cases, and drive incremental growth.
The service supports a range of ORBCOMM terminals and modules, and IoT Nano can be used for monitoring and controlling assets in industries like agriculture, transport, utilities, mining, and environmental monitoring.
