Examine the resilience of the Nothing Phone 3 in this endurance examination, checking for deformation or collapse.
The Nothing Phone 3, the first true flagship product from the tech company Nothing, has been put to the test by popular tech YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything. The results show that the Phone 3 is a well-built and sturdy device, offering standard-issue scratch resistance and heat endurance, but particularly impressing with its solid structural durability and resistance to bending under stress.
In his durability test, Nelson subjected the Phone 3 to a series of rigorous checks. The phone's 6.6-inch OLED display received a burn mark when exposed to a naked flame, but it's important to note that this mark is permanent. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i, which scratches beginning at Mohs level 6 and shows deeper grooves at level 7, consistent with typical high-end glass.
The Phone 3's sides are made of anodized aluminum, which scratches and chips under a razor blade, as expected for metal edges. However, the aluminum frame and the camera glass, as well as the surrounding rings, resist external damage well.
In the bend test, the Phone 3 passed with flying colours, showing no flex when bent by hand. This impressive feat is due to the strong structural integrity provided by the aluminum frame and the internal design.
Nelson also used a box cutter to scrape the blade down the sides of the Phone 3, causing scratches on the anodized aluminum. This test was intended to simulate everyday wear and tear, and the Phone 3 performed admirably, showing no signs of significant damage.
Despite the Phone 3's impressive durability, Nelson did criticise it for having the same data transfer speed as an iPhone, suggesting it is at least three years behind in terms of technology. The Phone 3 uses a USB-C 2.0 port, which is considered outdated for a flagship phone, while most Android flagships are now using USB-C 3.2, which transfers data 20 times faster.
Overall, the Nothing Phone 3 offers standard-issue scratch resistance and heat endurance, but particularly impresses with its solid structural durability and resistance to bending under stress. The phone's design combines a rugged internal protective shield and a sturdy frame to provide reliable physical durability while maintaining repairability.
