Europe Unites for 'Drone Wall' Initiative to Bolster Air Defense
European nations have united under the European Sky Shield Initiative, launched in October 2022, to strengthen their air defense systems. Led by Germany, the initiative involves 24 countries aiming to collectively procure and maintain these systems. Now, officials are gathering in Copenhagen to discuss further measures, including the 'drone wall' initiative, to protect European skies.
The drone wall, proposed by Ursula von der Leyen as part of the Eastern Flank Watch, is seen as a crucial addition to NATO's air defense. It aims to patch up a 'gaping hole' in current defenses against potential drone incursions. The initiative is a layered network of detection and interception systems, building on individual EU members' anti-drone capabilities.
Officials estimate that developing the drone wall could take at least three or four years, as stated by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. However, Latvia's Prime Minister Evika Silina believes it could be implemented in a much shorter timeframe. The European Commission is working on a 'Defence Readiness Roadmap' that includes this initiative. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte supports the drone wall, highlighting its cost-effectiveness.
The drone wall initiative, part of the European Sky Shield, is expected to complement existing defensive efforts and boost offensive capabilities. With backing from key figures like Ursula von der Leyen and Mark Rutte, the project is set to strengthen Europe's air defense, addressing the disproportionate threat posed by drones.
