EU Proposes New Climate Law, Bitkom Calls for Digital Integration

The European Commission has proposed a new European climate law, aiming to tackle climate change and digital transformation. Bitkom President Achim Berg has welcomed the proposal, stressing the importance of integrating digital technologies into the green transition.

Berg considers digital transformation and climate change as the two key challenges of our time. He believes that achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and reducing CO2 emissions by 2030 requires harnessing digital technologies. During Germany's EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, Berg proposed the policy initiative 'Digital Green Deal' to emphasize the digital aspect of European climate regulation.

Berg suggests that the new climate law should have a 'digital DNA' to facilitate the EU-wide green transformation. He proposes that half of the funds in the upcoming Horizon Europe program should be earmarked for digital solutions. Berg mentions existing climate-efficient digital solutions, such as Industry 4.0 sensors, smart machinery, and 3D printing, which can help reduce emissions and improve efficiency.

Berg proposes mobilizing political will to establish climate-friendly digital solutions more broadly. He suggests targeted investment in CO2-efficient technologies and products, along with reliable incentives for sustainable business management. With the European Commission's proposal for a European climate law, the stage is set for a green transition that embraces digital innovation.
