Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin Outlines Roadmap Emphasizing Layer-1 Solutions, Data Structures, and User Experience Improvements
Ethereum Foundation's Vision and Leadership Shake-up
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is setting its sights on a decentralized, robust, and thriving Ethereum ecosystem in the long run. Aya Miyaguchi, EF's Executive Director, and co-founder Vitalik Buterin, share this vision and have drawn up a strategic blueprint to achieve it.
Rebuilding the Ethereum empire starts with a renewed focus on the basics—Layer 1s (L1s), Blobs, and user experience (UX). With global consumers of the Ethereum ecosystem in mind, their objective is to make it more resilient, decentralized, and accessible.
Making ETH Useful and Resilient
As part of this vision, the EF aims to maximize the use of ETH across diverse applications like decentralized finance (DeFi), social media, and even AI coordination platforms. They also seek to strengthen the blockchain's technical and social infrastructure through decentralization, risk management, and a diverse development team.
To make this a reality, they have outlined key priorities for the upcoming year. Scaling the Ethereum mainnet and advancing Blobs technology sit at the top of the list. Improving UX across the chain and boosting L1 and L2 interoperability are other essential components of their strategy.
Blobs: A Cheaper, Faster Solution
Blobs, recently introduced through EIP-4844 in the Dencun upgrade (aka Proto-Danksharding), offer a more cost-effective way for L2 rollups to post data to the Ethereum mainnet. This tackles long-standing issues of high fees and network congestion.
Empowering Users and Developers
Refining both user and developer experiences has become a priority for the Ethereum Foundation. For users, this means making wallets more user-friendly, simplifying gas fee comprehension, and ensuring seamless interaction across L2 networks.
For developers, Ethereum aims to streamline the building process through better tools, documentation, grants, and education. This will make it easier for devs to create innovative applications and improve the overall user experience on the network.
Leadership Shake-up
Working side by side, the new co-executive directors, Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak, will oversee strategic planning, ecosystem development, and daily operations. Their recruitment, along with Bastian Aue and Josh Stark, who will help with organizational strategy, hiring, project management, and communications, aims to strengthen the foundation's leadership and ensure effective execution of its mission.
Wang and Stańczak emphasize adhering to four guiding principles: censorship resistance, open-source development, privacy, and security. Stańczak will be focusing on expediting technical infrastructure execution during his two-year term, while Wang will serve as a bridge between the board and operations.
