Enhancing Mobile Communication Quality in Belarus
In recent news, there has been a growing interest in the potential improvements in mobile connectivity along railway lines in Belarus. However, a direct and detailed description of these improvements following a decree by President Alexander Lukashenko remains elusive in publicly available information.
Nonetheless, some general insights can be inferred. Modernization of railway mobile communications often involves upgrading legacy systems like GSM-R to cloud-native platforms that support future railway mobile communication standards and improve service reliability and safety, as seen in the Netherlands with ProRail's recent contract with Nokia for such an upgrade.
In Belarus, military and logistical railway use is active, but there is no mention of mobile connectivity improvements along Belarusian railways or any presidential decree-driven initiatives in the available sources. It is likely that improvements, if any, would involve upgrading legacy communications systems along railway lines to more modern, possibly cloud-based, or LTE/5G-based networks to enhance connectivity quality, as part of broader national infrastructure or security efforts.
Alexander Lukashenko has indeed issued a decree to simplify the construction of cellular communication objects, with the aim of increasing network capacity. The decree also abolishes the procedure for assessing the environmental impact, which previously took up to eight months.
Dmitry Korzun, head of the Ministry of Communications' department of electric communications and regulation of the radio frequency spectrum, has explained the measures to improve mobile connectivity. The Ministry is actively working with the railway to address the challenges in improving mobile connectivity, which include allocating land, providing electricity, and laying optical fiber cables.
The number of communication stations in the pipeline for the first stage is approximately 60. A station needs to be installed for improved connectivity. Consent from representatives of garden cooperatives is required for tower installation on their lands. The decree does not specify whether it applies to all stages of tower installation or just the first stage.
The changes detailed by the Ministry of Communications aim to simplify the process of building and launching communication stations. New lands for tower installation have been designated, including areas in garden cooperatives. The quality of mobile connectivity along railway lines is set to be improved, with the decree expected to enable the expansion of LTE coverage in the 1800 MHz range.
While the specifics of the improvements along Belarusian railway lines remain to be seen, it is clear that the government is taking steps to address the issue of poor mobile connectivity. "Private plans" for the improvement of mobile connectivity along railway lines are already in place, suggesting a concerted effort to bridge this gap. For those seeking detailed information about Belarus’s railway mobile connectivity upgrades post-Lukashenko's decree, it may require access to Belarus-specific government releases or railway authority publications beyond the current publicly indexed international sources.
