Elon Musk Experiences Criticism Over Proposed Adjustments to X Algorithm
Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X Corp., has announced upcoming adjustments to the algorithm of social network X, formerly Twitter. The changes aim to promote informational and entertaining content while reducing negativity.
The changes will introduce two new tabs: "For You," which will be algorithmically curated like TikTok’s feed, and "Following," which will show tweets only from followed accounts. With a paid Twitter Blue subscription, users can have their tweets boosted algorithmically.
However, these planned changes have sparked concerns among users. The fear is that the new algorithm might lead to a deterioration in content quality and the spread of misinformation. The "For You" feed's algorithm favors engagement, which could potentially amplify falsehoods, hateful, racist, or homophobic content, skewing democratic debate and fueling violence.
Amnesty International's analysis revealed systemic biases favouring inflammatory content and paid "Premium" subscribers' posts. French authorities are investigating claims that changes to X's algorithm under Elon Musk have enabled "foreign interference," reduced the diversity of voices, and lacked transparency in moderation and algorithmic criteria.
Since Musk's takeover, various hard-right and politically extreme accounts have seen exponential follower growth and engagement boosts, often correlated with Musk's interactions, raising worries about amplifying divisive or extremist narratives.
The X Corp. team is working on a dynamic system for more personalized content delivery. However, some users have questioned what constitutes "negative content" in the context of the algorithm changes.
The announcement has drawn criticism from users over fears that it might open the door to censorship. The goal of the changes is to maximize unregretted user-seconds, but the lack of sufficient safeguards against misinformation, hate speech, and manipulation has prompted official probes and widespread concern over censorship, transparency, and democratic integrity on X.
