Electric vehicle brand Firefly set for European debut in August
Nio, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to commence deliveries of its new Firefly compact car in Europe next week, starting with the Netherlands and Norway. This marks a significant step in the company's European expansion.
The Firefly, positioned as a high-end boutique car, features premium materials and high safety standards. It comes standard with nine airbags, a rarity in this vehicle class. The electric motor produces 105 kW/143 PS, enabling a top speed of 150 km/h. The vehicle can be charged at DC stations up to 100 kW, with a 10-80% charge taking just 29 minutes. The WLTP range of the Firefly is 330 kilometers.
In the Netherlands, the Firefly costs €29,900, and an equivalent price is expected for Germany. However, the timeline for Germany's Firefly launch is unclear, but some expect an early launch after the introduction in the Netherlands and Norway. In Norway, the price is €23,500 due to a VAT exemption for electric vehicles.
Nio initially planned to have its own network of battery swap stations for the Firefly. However, the company has distanced itself from this plan for economic reasons. Instead, Nio's fifth-generation battery swap stations, expected to launch in early 2026, will support vehicles from Nio, its volume brand Onvo, and Firefly.
Firefly deliveries in additional European countries are scheduled to begin in late 2025 and continue into 2026. Specifically, deliveries in Austria and Hungary are scheduled before the end of 2025, while Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, and the Czech Republic are planned for launch in 2026. Nio also aims to introduce Firefly in more than a dozen European markets including Greece, Bulgaria, and Cyprus over the next 18 months.
William Li, founder, chairman, and CEO of Nio, emphasized that achieving this goal is a process, as he stated in May. Long-term, Nio aims for Firefly to contribute approximately ten percent of the company's total revenue. The Firefly's launch in Europe is a crucial step towards this goal.
