Volkswagen Brings Familiar Names to Electric Portfolio with the Upcoming ID. Polo

Volkswagen is making a significant move in the electric vehicle (EV) market by transferring established names to its electric portfolio with each new model generation. This shift was announced by Thomas Schäfer, the CEO of Volkswagen, who stated that these names are deeply ingrained in people's minds and embody qualities such as quality, timeless design, and technologies for all.

The first EV to adopt this new moniker will be the production version of the VW ID.2All, arriving as the new Volkswagen ID. Polo in 2026. This move marks a return to familiar model names for Volkswagen's future EVs.

The ID. Polo will continue the Polo model line by replacing the previous VW ID.2 electric small car. By combining the familiar Polo name with the electric ID branding, Volkswagen aims to connect tradition with future electric mobility.

In addition to the ID. Polo, Volkswagen is also working on a more affordable ID.2 EV, expected to cost from £22k and arrive in 2025. This model, yet to be named, is a preview of what customers can expect from Volkswagen's commitment to making electric vehicles accessible to a wider audience.

The new Volkswagen Polo will go on sale in the UK, with the prices and specifications for the 2021 model announced. The new Polo is priced from £17,885. However, the ID. Polo GTI version will be released at a later date.

The ID. Cross Concept previews a new high-riding electric Polo and an EV equivalent of the VW T-Cross. This concept suggests that Volkswagen is not only focusing on compact EVs but also expanding its electric offering to include SUVs.

Volkswagen is bringing together the electric and combustion engine worlds to help customers navigate the brand's product range more easily in the future. All vehicles with conventional drives will continue to run under their previous names, ensuring a smooth transition for customers who are not yet ready to make the switch to electric.

In summary, Volkswagen is moving its well-known names into the electric portfolio with the ID. Polo being just the beginning. This move is part of Volkswagen's commitment to making electric vehicles more accessible and familiar to its customers, while also expanding its electric offering to include more affordable and diverse models. The ID. Polo, set to launch in 2026, is a testament to this commitment and a sign of things to come from Volkswagen in the electric vehicle market.
