Effective Satellite Communication for Effective Firefighting Strategies

Baden-Württemberg, the German state, is investing in a satellite-supported radio system for its fire departments. The aim is to ensure safe communication, especially during extreme crises.

The contract for the provision of the "K-Funk" system, a component of the future-proof communication technology, has been awarded to EuroBOS. The "K-Funk" system provided by abel&kaeufl from Landshut will serve as the backbone of this new satellite radio system.

The system, known as "SaFe" (Satellite Radio Fire Department), is being equipped to city and county districts, government districts, and the Ministry of the Interior in Baden-Württemberg. A total of 52 fixed building-installed radio devices and 190 portable satellite handheld devices have been acquired for this purpose.

The satellite radio network is a reliable and secure means of communication, meeting the highest security requirements. The information transmitted on the network is encrypted throughout the entire transport path, preventing unauthorized interception.

One of the key advantages of the satellite radio system is its ability to continue functioning even during a prolonged, area-wide power outage. Moreover, it does not require additional ground infrastructure for operation, but only a connection of the antenna to a satellite for communication.

The satellite radio system can provide relief to the digital radio network during high load. This feature is particularly useful for the fire department leadership, who can create relief in case of very high load on the digital radio network.

The system can also be used by the fire department when deployed abroad or when foreign fire departments are deployed in Baden-Württemberg, where digital radio access is not possible.

After the introductory phase for the system and a first evaluation with the using institutions, the Ministry of the Interior will decide on any necessary adjustments. Thomas Strobl, Deputy Minister-President and Interior Minister, explained the necessity of modern communication technology for efficient emergency response.

The contract for the provision of the "K-Funk" system by abel&kaeufl from Landshut runs initially for five years. This investment is a significant step towards ensuring safe and efficient communication for Baden-Württemberg's fire departments.
