Article: The Ongoing "Engine Control Error" Issue in Porsche Taycan 4S Models

The Porsche Taycan, a high-performance electric vehicle (EV), has been the subject of concern for some owners, particularly those with the Taycan 4S model produced after 2021. The issue at hand is the "Engine control error" or "Loss of motive power," which can cause a powertrain shutdown.

The root cause of this problem was found to be due to faulty software, leading to potential short circuits in high-voltage battery modules. In response, Porsche has issued recalls for over 27,500 Taycan sedans, covering model years 2020-2023, to address these risks [1][2].

The recall includes a software update to monitor battery conditions continuously, aiming to prevent battery faults that can lead to these errors or fires. However, sales of the Taycan have been temporarily halted in certain markets, such as the UK, due to battery fire concerns [2].

The recall and technical bulletins also include the inspection and replacement of battery cell blocks if necessary, directly targeted at resolving related electrical system errors and reducing the risk of engine control faults linked to battery issues [1].

Several Taycan owners have shared their experiences with this issue. Mark Tan, for instance, experienced an issue with his 2020 Taycan Turbo when demanding high throttle, resulting in a shutdown and coasting to a stop. His wife's 2020 Taycan Turbo, meanwhile, had issues with the coolant fans in the front bumper, causing battery and coolant temperatures to rise, requiring approximately $8,000 in repairs [3].

Jeff Voge, another Porsche Taycan 4S owner, is also experiencing an issue with his high-performance EV. This known problem among some Taycan owners has sparked extensive discussions on the Taycan forum and Reddit, reflecting a mixed reception among owners. While some praise the car's driving characteristics and tech, others express dissatisfaction with its reliability [4].

In the face of these challenges, some dealers are taking matters into their own hands, aiming to alleviate concerns and improve the Taycan's reputation. Despite these efforts, the issue has cast a shadow over the Taycan, particularly as Porsche's 911 continues to carry the brand's heritage, with most of its EV models being retrofitted to hybrid or internal combustion engine power [5].

The 718 EV, Porsche's upcoming electric model, is already facing a negative reception. However, the author frequently includes Porsche content in their articles, offering a balanced perspective on the brand's developments [6].
