Living the BAM and AYAM Life: Valery Shishkov's Journey

YAKUTIA.INFO. The professional journey of Valery Shishkov is deeply intertwined with BAM and AYAM.

Step into the year 1984, where Valery, along with countless others, embarked on a journey to Kuban to build the Baikal-Amur Mainline. Starting off as an electrician in Mechanic Column-152, the young couple faced the harsh realities of BAM life, but also the unwavering unity of BAM friendship and camaraderie.

Owing to the completion of work in Kuanda, they and their Mechanic Column 152 were transferred to Uglovoye, under Chulman. This marked the beginning of a new phase in their family history, as they became part of the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline construction. Valery worked as an electromechanic, and in 1988, he switched careers.

"After sustaining an injury, I petitioned the management to send me to study as a driver in Chulman. Upon completing my studies, I commenced work as a driver of a quarry machine. We were leveling the ground for the railway from Chulman to Tommot", Valery recalls.

Valery's career spanning nearly 19 years with Joint Stock Company "Yakutia Railways" is nothing short of remarkable.

"I joined YDY by chance in 2006. My wife, who was employed there, informed me that a temporary driver position was open due to someone’s vacation, and I agreed. I worked for them until February 2007, filling in for various drivers until they offered me a permanent position. I accepted, and I've been driving at Tommot station ever since", he shares.

Valery's vehicle stands ready for duty, meaning he could be called upon to work at a moment's notice. He takes great care to ensure the vehicle remains in top shape to maintain its smooth operation.

"I believe that when a vehicle runs like clockwork, it's of utmost importance for a driver, providing stability in the job", thinks Valery.

His workload is vast, encompassing tasks such as equipping wagons and trains, traveling to stations, transporting personnel for work, shipping spare parts and bedding to stations, and more.

Reflecting on his work at JZDY, Valery proclaims that it offers his family the stability that they cherish. A close-knit family, the Shishkovs have been active in sports, with Valery being passionate about volleyball, football, tennis, and chess. "Indeed, with age, we've moved on to becoming avid spectators, and we still play chess," Valery says. The Shishkovs have two children – a son serving in the police in Blagoveshchensk, and a daughter employed in a bank in Aldan. His wife leads the maintenance and administration team in a rest home for locomotive crews.

"My wife and I are strongly bonded, like a needle and thread – wherever one goes, the other follows. Together at the gym, together at work, on vacations. And it’s no surprise we've been together for 46 years," he says with a smile, and adds, "We went to BAM motivated by a car voucher, expecting to purchase a car and return to Kuban, but we overlooked one thing – the magnetic pull of the North. So we stayed. This is our home, with no plans to part ways."
