Denton Secures Battery Storage, Wind Power Deals for Affordable, Reliable Energy
Denton Municipal Electric (DME) has secured two significant power purchase agreements to meet the city's growing energy needs. The deals, approved by the Denton City Council, involve a battery storage project and a wind energy project, both set to enhance affordability, reliability, and sustainability for the Denton community.
The battery storage project, slated for delivery in June 2026, will have a 100-megawatt capacity and a two-hour duration. It is owned and operated by Jupiter Power through the Tidwell II project in Central Texas. This project will help address the 'duck curve' exposure, where renewable output reduces in the evening, leading to high pricing volatility and exposing customers to extreme prices.
The wind energy project, already in production, is the Blue Summit 1 Wind project in Vernon. It is owned and operated by NextEra Energy, a leading company in renewable energy, and offers approximately 140 megawatts of capacity for 15 years. This project is the second between DME and NextEra, following the Bluebell Solar I and II project in West Texas. It brings DME's total renewable capacity to just under 600 MW, diversifying renewable production and helping reduce exposure to increasing nighttime power prices. Both projects are expected to be grandfathered in to receive federal production tax credits, ensuring no construction delays or changes in pricing.
DME's latest agreements for battery storage and wind energy demonstrate the city's commitment to renewable energy and affordability. These projects, set to come online in the coming years, will help maintain reliability and sustainability for the Denton community, while also mitigating the impacts of the 'duck curve' and reducing exposure to high nighttime power prices.
