Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America has confirmed a data breach that occurred on July 16, 2025, affecting the personally identifiable data of over 1.4 million U.S. customers. The malicious threat actor infiltrated the company's third-party, cloud-based CRM system.

The breach exposed names, addresses, and dates of birth of Allianz's clients, as well as some agents and select employees. To address the situation, Allianz has dispatched containment measures shortly after initial access and begun notifying impacted individuals about the data breach.

The ShinyHunters group, a hacker collective known for large-scale data breaches and extortion, has been reportedly involved in this incident. Known for targeting cloud platforms like Salesforce, ShinyHunters have been implicated in numerous breaches around mid-2025, including major attacks on financial and insurance firms.

Allianz advises affected policyholders to activate identity protection services as instructed in their notification and to monitor credit reports and financial activity closely. They also warn against phishing attacks, emphasizing that Allianz will never ask for account logins or Social Security numbers via unsolicited calls or emails.

In response to the breach, Allianz is offering 24 months of identity theft protection and credit monitoring through Kroll. Affected policyholders are also encouraged to consider placing fraud alerts if suspicious activity is detected.

Industry reports suggest that third-party systems are responsible for nearly 30% of major cyber incidents. Allianz notified law enforcement and regulatory bodies about the incident and filed incident notifications with authorities in Maine, Massachusetts, and other states as required.

The severity of these large cyber claims has increased, with Allianz's internal data showing a sharp rise, especially for privacy/data breaches. In early 2024, the number of such claims rose by 14%, and by early 2024, this figure had increased by another 17%.

Allianz Life confirms that its internal systems were not breached, only the external vendor platform. As the investigation continues, Allianz encourages everyone to stay vigilant and to take necessary precautions to protect their personal information.
