Riding the Budget Wave: Five Compact Electric Cars Under 20K

There's a changes afoot in the automotive landscape, and it's all about affordability. The electric car is finally within reach for many, with the 20K mark no longer an insurmountable wall. The latest addition to this burgeoning group is the new BYD Dolphin Surf, priced at an introductory offer of 19,990 euros, but more and more options are popping up under the 30K threshold. And the next price barrier is crumbling: soon, there will be viable electric cars for under 20K, as promised by Volkswagen and Renault.

For years, many had hoped, but few truly believed it. Yet now, the prices for electric cars are on the move. While small electric cars still cost around twice as much as their fossil fuel counterparts, the selection is growing. In the not-too-distant future, there will be serious electric cars priced under 20K, and these are the five small cars leading the charge.

BYD Dolphin Surf: Setting the Tide

Is it the game changer BYD claims it to be? With a length of 4 meters and a wheelbase of 2.50 meters, this compact electric car offers space for four adults and their luggage, and it's not small when it comes to performance. It can reach speeds of up to 150 km/h, and with the large 43.3 kWh battery, it can cover over 500 kilometers on a single charge (in theory, at least, if you're city driving).

But the Chinese manufacturer stretched to achieve this price, as shown by the fine print: the 19,990 euro basic price is an introductory offer that lasts only for a few weeks. Afterwards, the bill rises to 22,990 euros. This puts the Dolphin Surf in the same league as cars like the Citroën eC3, Opel Frontera, and the Fiat Grande Panda, but it might remain the price-performance winner there.

VW ID.1: The Revival of Volkswagen

While the ID.3 didn't quite live up to expectations, hopes are high for the ID.2. Considered an entry-level model, the ID.Every1 is expected to come in at under 20K when it hits the market in two years. A four-seater of solid 3.80 meters, it offers space for four people and 305 liters of luggage, as well as an electric drive with at least 250 kilometers of range, according to the Lower Saxonians.

Renault Twingo: A Nostalgic Spark

With retro aesthetics and a compact size of 3.75 meters, the Renault Twingo Electric seeks to appeal to those with a nostalgic streak. While the range might not be as impressive as some others on this list, with a probably not even 30 kWh battery reaching just 200 kilometers, CEO Luca de Meo argues that a few compromises have to be made.

Dacia Spring: Budget Sprinter from Romania

The Spring is already setting the price benchmark for electric cars at an unprecedented 16,900 euros, and next year, Dacia plans to substantially undercut that with the successor to the Spring. This time, it won't be produced in China, but in Romania. While details are still scarce, it's expected to be priced around the 18K mark.

Leapmotor T03: The Asian Interloper

Stellantis has teamed up with Hangzhou-based Leapmotor to offer another price-breaker under 20K. The T03 costs an affordable 18,900 euros and offers five seats and up to 210 to 508 liters of trunk space. It's capable of reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h, powered by a 37.3 kWh battery that supports charging at 6.6 or 45 kW.
