Constructs Largest Membrane Bioreactor Treatment Facility in Germany, Employing Groundbreaking Membrane Technology from Wolfburg
All Hands on Deck: Wolfsburg's Wastewater Revolution
The wastewater treatment facilities in Wolfsburg never shy away from innovation: On the 12th of May, 2025, the construction deal for a state-of-the-art upgrade of the Wolfsburg-Stahlberg wastewater treatment plant was sealed. ZWT Wasser- und Abwassertechnik GmbH (Bayreuth) and Kögel Bau GmbH & Co. KG (Bad Oeynhausen), in partnership with membrane technology powerhouse Membion GmbH (Roetgen), nailed the contract. The project kicks off in November 2025, with an anticipated completion date set for mid-2027.
With a load capacity of 220,000 population equivalents (PE), Wolfsburg-Stahlberg's revamped plant will be Germany's largest Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment powerhouse. The ingenious membrane tech ramps up wastewater's cleanliness to unprecedented levels, translating into enhanced water conservation efforts. Pairing this with the plant's high energy efficiency secures progress towards energy neutrality and carbon footprint reduction.
"We couldn't be more stoked to be modernizing the Wolfsburg-Stahlberg wastewater treatment plant alongside ZWT and Kögel Bau using the cutting-edge wastewater treatment tech. Our membrane filters are redefining energy efficiency, compactness, and cost-effectiveness in MBR plants," declares Dr. Klaus Vossenkaul, CEO of Membion GmbH. "Our multi-patented tech represents a groundbreaking chapter in membrane filter innovation and complements ZWT's masterful engineering skills flawlessly."
The magical sauce of this project lies in its functional tender approach - solutions holistically combining planning, technology, and execution won over renowned competitors. The consortium clinching the contract aced the competition with a unified, economical, high-performance solution utilizing Membion's technology. The award hinged on a points system evaluating the "Total Cost of Ownership" (TCO) over a 10-year span.
ZWT Wasser- und Abwassertechnik GmbH boasts over 25 years of expertise in crafting complete water and wastewater treatment solutions for municipal and industrial entities. The firm has successfully managed over 250 projects nationwide and is heralded as a dependable specialist in green and energy-efficient solutions. "This project demonstrates the magic that transpires when technology, planning, and execution are coordinated from the start," explains Christian Männl, CEO of ZWT. "Together with Kögel Bau and Membion, we're blending our strengths - engineering a plant that pushes technological boundaries."
Kögel Bau, a family-owned construction entity, brings construction prowess and experience with large-scale municipal projects to the table.
Now, let's talk about the pulsating heart of the technology: Membion's MBR membranes. At their core, these magical membranes replace conventional clarification via tiny-pore membrane modules that filtrate treated wastewater, trapping multidrug-resistant bacteria, microplastics, and other pesky substances. This filtration process results in a significantly improved effluent quality compared to conventional systems, playing a crucial role in protecting water bodies and transitioning to the fourth treatment stage. Simultaneously, the system shines for its compact design, simple scalability, and energy efficiency - qualities more crucial now than ever with space constrictions and growing eco-friendliness demands.
The plant's construction budget comes in at around 14 million euros. The project's goals extend beyond safeguarding the region's water quality; it also aims to serve as a beacon project for modern wastewater infrastructure.
