Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project is now 70% complete. The ambitious infrastructure project, extending 16 kilometers from Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road, is currently in its final stages and is anticipated to be completed this year.

During an on-site inspection, RTA's Director General and Chairman, Mattar Al Tayer, highlighted the project's importance. It represents a significant part of a larger master plan aimed at enhancing the Umm Suqeim-Al Qudra corridor, which serves over one million residents across significant residential and development areas.

The current phase of the project, covering 4.6 kilometers, includes the construction of a four-lane, 800-meter tunnel near the Umm Suqeim-Al Barsha South intersection, a key section located close to Kings’ School. This component is designed to integrate with major north-south roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road, forming one of RTA's strategic east-west traffic routes.

Once completed, the project is expected to boost the corridor's traffic capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions and cut travel times between significant junctions by 61%. For instance, the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road is estimated to be reduced from nearly 10 minutes to under 4 minutes.

In the spirit of innovation, the RTA has deployed smart technologies, including drones and artificial intelligence, to monitor construction progress and improve efficiency. These technologies have significantly increased the project monitoring's effectiveness by 40% and doubled the field presence, slashing survey times by 60%.

Preceding phases of the project include bridge constructions completed in 2013 and 2020, enhancing traffic flow and connectivity around Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South. The ongoing improvements align with Dubai's broader urban expansion goals and commitment to upgrading its road network for a growing population.
