Gaming in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: CDU's Dream Crashes as Schwerin Parliament Balks
CDU's endeavor to boost the gaming sector encounters setbacks, progress stalled. - Conservative Party (CDU) suffers setback in attempts to boost gaming industry support
It looks like the CDU's ambitious dream to turn Mecklenburg-Vorpommern into a gaming paradise is crumbling, and it's all thanks to a lack of support from the opposition in Schwerin's state parliament. The untenable proposal to cover up to half the costs of concept and prototype development hasn'tget a green light.
CDU leader Daniel Peters defended the proposition, arguing it was about luring smart, innovative minds to a burgeoning industry. "The competition is fierce," he admitted, "But we've gotta stake our claim." The plan also calls for setting up a scholarship program for aspiring game developers, as well as establishing an innovation hub for game development. The CDU earmarked a whopping one million euros annually for the initiative starting from 2026.
Economy Minister Wolfgang Blank (independent), however, isn’t convinced. He stresses that there are already existing funding programs game devs can leverage. Blank emphasizes that the gaming world has spread like wildfire into sectors like medicine and agriculture, and it’s already booming in digital innovation centers. Representatives of the creative economy can now find networking, advice, and potential investors at these centers.
According to Blank's estimations, the cultural and creative industry boasts around 2,500 jobs and generates nearly a billion euros in revenue annually within the state.
Left-wing parliamentarian Hennig Foerster puts a damper on the CDU’s aspirations by pointing out the astronomical costs associated with developing new online games. Foerster warns that the state budget won't take kindly to funding this "playground." The AfD's Martin Schmidt argues for funneling the limited resources into areas already crucial to the state, such as tourism, instead.

- The CDU's plan to establish a scholarship program for aspiring game developers and an innovation hub for game development, aimed at attracting smart, innovative minds to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's gaming industry, faces opposition due to the substantial costs involved, with Left-wing parliamentarian Hennig Foerster warning that the state budget might not accommodate such expenses.
- Despite the CDU's argument that setting up an initiative to support the gaming industry is essential for competitive advantage, Economy Minister Wolfgang Blank and the AfD's Martin Schmidt argue that the resources could be better utilized in areas like tourism, while pointing out the digital innovation centers and existing funding programs already supporting the proliferation of gaming in diverse sectors like medicine and agriculture.
