Coalition Brings Solar Power and Water to Moroccan Earthquake Victims
A coalition of organizations has come together in the Ouarzazate region of Morocco to aid earthquake-stricken communities. Their mission is to rebuild and fortify these areas by installing solar systems and water pumps, expanding irrigation for nearby villages.
The initiative, launched in July 2024, focuses on restoring the environment and providing food and economic resources. It aligns with SDG 6 and SDG 11, demonstrating a commitment to clean water, sanitation, and sustainable communities.
The High Atlas Foundation (HAF), Siemens Energy, and Siemens Gamesa have partnered to enhance recovery and resilience. In March 2024, they installed 26 solar panels and a 7.4 KW solar pump in Agloula village, ensuring reliable water access for irrigation. This has led to the planting of 1,500 fruit trees, benefiting around 50 households (350 people).
HAF's local partner association, led by Janah Mohammed, expressed gratitude for the improved water situation and hope for further expansion. The project aims to support farmers and rural cooperatives by planting and irrigating 30,000 more fruit trees, benefiting approximately 500 families (3,000 people) in nearby villages.
The collaborative effort in the Ouarzazate region is creating a sustainable model for other villages. With the installation of solar systems and water pumps, the initiative is restoring the environment, providing food and economic resources, and establishing resilience in earthquake-affected communities.
