BYD Launches Atto 2 Electric SUV in Malaysia, Boosting Overseas Sales

Chinese automaker BYD has made a significant move in the Malaysian market by launching the Atto 2, a compact pure electric SUV. The Atto 2, previously known as the Yuan Up, promises to offer a range of up to 410 km based on the NEDC cycle, making it an attractive option for Malaysian consumers.

The Atto 2 is powered by a front-mounted electric motor producing 177 hp (130 kW) and 290 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.9 seconds. Key specifications include a 51.13 kWh BYD Blade LFP battery, a comprehensive ADAS suite, and a vehicle-to-load (V2L) power supply at 3.3 kW.

The Atto 2 is available in a single Premium variant in Malaysia, with a starting price of RM100,000 ($23,630). Exterior colours available include Ski White, Breeze Green, and Harbour Grey.

BYD has been the sales champion for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Malaysia for three consecutive years and has established over 40 sales outlets in the country. The Atto 2 went on sale in Malaysia on July 24, making it the first market to receive the right-hand drive version of the Yuan Up.

BYD's optimism about strong overseas sales for the year 2023 is not unfounded. In June 2023, the company sold 90,049 vehicles overseas, marking the seventh consecutive month of record-breaking sales. The Atto 2's launch in Malaysia is part of BYD's strategy to expand its global presence.

In other news, BYD sold 382,585 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in June 2023, a 11.98 percent increase year-on-year and a 0.03 percent increase month-on-month. This growth is a testament to BYD's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

The Atto 2 is the first right-hand drive version of the Yuan Up to be launched globally. It slots between the BYD Dolphin and Atto 3 in the lineup by size and price. The range figure of 410 km is NEDC; a WLTP estimate is about 350 km.

BYD entered the Malaysian passenger vehicle market with the Yuan Plus as its first model in December 2022. The company's success in Malaysia is a significant step towards its goal of becoming a major player in the global automotive industry.
