"Braunschweig University Explores Next-Generation Transportation Options via Funded Studies"
Braunschweig, Germany - landmark research collaboration approved
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has provided funding for an ambitious interdisciplinary research project on future mobility planning, according to a press release from the Technical University of Braunschweig. The collaborative effort, dubbed the Collaborative Research Center for Future Mobility Planning, combines the expertise of four German universities, along with the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
This groundbreaking project aims to revolutionize mobility planning through data-driven, agile planning that prioritizes responsibility. Rather than single-discipline approaches, the initiative will leverage a multidisciplinary network of leading research institutions, making it the first extensive interdisciplinary research program in the field of mobility and transport research.
Leading the application were the Technical Universities of Dresden and Munich, two of Germany's most prominent academic centers for transport research. Partnering with TU Braunschweig, TU Berlin, and DLR, the consortium brings together extensive experience and innovative possibilities to realize this challenging and unprecedented undertaking. Over the course of four years, the DFG has allocated a total of 12.7 million euros in funding for the consortium.
At the heart of the project lies the SFB/Transregio “Data-driven agile planning for responsible mobility” (AgiMo), which focuses on developing cutting-edge mobility planning strategies utilizing data and computer models. These new methods aim to optimize traffic flow forecasting and management, striking a balance between various traffic participants' interests. The research adheres to the 4F principles - Function, Form, Fairness, and Forever, with the ultimate goal of creating an open-source digital twin to make data and models widely accessible.
Key institutions involved in the research include the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the spokesperson institution TU Dresden, TU Berlin, and TU Braunschweig, all working in concert with DLR. This research integrates both technical and social sciences to construct evidence-based future mobility planning scenarios.
