Brand Phishing Surges 38% in Q1 2024, Microsoft Top Target

Check Point Research, a renowned cybersecurity firm, has revealed a significant increase in brand phishing attacks in the first quarter of 2024. The rate surged to 38%, up from 33% in the previous quarter.

The most targeted brands were Microsoft, Google, LinkedIn, and Zoom. Microsoft 365 led the pack with a staggering 38% of all phishing attempts, followed by Google at 11%. LinkedIn, likely due to increased job hunting, saw a rise from 3% to 11%. Notably, Airbnb debuted in the top 10 list, possibly due to Easter travel season, with 1% of attempts.

Amazon's impersonation rate, however, decreased from 9% in Q4 2023 to 3% in Q1 2024.

The technology sector continues to be the most impersonated industry in brand phishing. Users are advised to remain vigilant and double-check the authenticity of websites and emails, especially when dealing with these prominent Microsoft 365 brands.
