Boost in digital business performance
The business situation for the overall economy in Germany remains challenging, with an assessment of -3.1 points, according to recent reports. However, the business climate for the IT and telecommunications sector is showing signs of improvement.
The current business situation for many companies in this sector has improved from 0.4 points in the previous month, now standing at 6.9 points at the end of August. This positive trend is reflected in the Bitkom-ifo Digital Index, which has increased by 3.3 points compared to July, returning to positive territory at +1.9 points.
Despite this improvement, business expectations for the remainder of the year for the IT and telecommunications sector have not yet risen above zero, standing at -3.1 points. The overall business expectations in the economy have improved slightly, but still remain negative at -7.8 points in August.
Dr. Ralf Wintergerst, President of Bitkom, the German digital association, stated that business in the IT and telecommunications sector is running smoothly in most companies. He emphasized that much of the future depends on whether the federal government reduces burdens and regulation and presents an ambitious modernization agenda.
The German federal government has been taking steps to promote the digital economy and strengthen companies' future expectations in this sector. Notable measures include the launch of the 2025 European Digital Sovereignty Summit, the approval of the 2026 ERP Economic Plan Law, and the reorganization of ministerial responsibilities to consolidate digital policy, AI, and digital economy under the Digital Minister Dr. Karsten Wildberger.
