In the world of gaming, the remastered version of the classic RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, has been a hot topic since its release. The game, developed by Bethesda and Virtuos Games, has been available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (on both Xbox PC and Steam), and PS5 since its announcement in mid-2025.

The remastered version, a modernized Unreal Engine 5 take on the 2006 RPG classic, has been well-received by many, with reviews scoring it a glowing 4.5/5 stars in our own review. However, for PC players, the experience has been less than ideal.

Persistent bugs, performance problems like frame rate drops, glitches, and crashes have been the main issues with the PC version of Oblivion Remastered on Steam and the Xbox PC app. Despite patches aiming to improve performance, many fundamental issues remain unresolved as of mid-2025.

Key problems include frame rate inconsistencies and drops, frequent glitches and visual bugs, memory leaks causing crashes during extended play sessions, and ineffective fixes even after the release of Patch 1.2 in July 2025. These problems affect both PC versions on Steam and Xbox PC app, as well as current-gen consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S).

The underlying cause is partly the original game's old engine and codebase, which struggles to meet modern hardware and software expectations despite the remaster's visual updates.

Despite these challenges, the game has been a success, hitting over 9 million players across all its platforms in a short span. The community has also stepped up, with mods like the Unofficial Oblivion Remastered Patch and Ultimate Engine Tweaks available for the game.

For PC players who are still on the fence, it might be advisable to wait for improvements before diving into the world of Oblivion Remastered. However, PC Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can play the game on Xbox PC without making a full purchase.

Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is currently available at a discounted price of $10.19 at CDKeys, making it an attractive option for those looking to explore the game without the PC-specific issues.

As for Virtuos Games, the developers of Oblivion Remastered, they are currently working on "Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater". The company recently faced layoffs, with 270 workers being let go.

In conclusion, while Oblivion Remastered has been a hit with many gamers, PC players are facing a mixed bag of experiences due to performance instability, persistent bugs, and crashes. However, with the game's success and the community's support, it remains to be seen how these issues will be addressed in the future.
