Best Strategies and Insights for IoT, as provided by Thales

In a series of exclusive interviews following Thales' win at the Smart Cities & IoT Innovation Awards 2024, Stephane Quetglas, Marketing Director at Thales Cyber security and Digital Identity, discussed the company's innovative approaches to IoT connectivity and security.

The interviews delved into scaling and simplifying IoT deployments using flexible eSIM products, providing insights into Thales' strategy for IoT connectivity and security. Two downloadable resources, Thales Certificate - eSIM Management and Thales Certificate - IoT Security, were mentioned as available resources from the discussions.

Thales has reinforced its position as a leader in IoT connectivity by deploying a 'ready to use' certified solution for IoT connectivity based on the latest GSMA IoT standard SGP.32. This allows IoT devices such as smartwatches, trackers, and medical sensors to download and activate mobile subscriptions remotely without requiring physical SIM cards or intermediary devices like smartphones. This capability significantly enhances operational efficiency through mass remote activation and accelerates deployment across ecosystems.

Crucially, this solution strengthens security by providing end-to-end protection of connection and credentials even during remote activation, establishing a globally recognized "seal of trust." This certification helps IoT service providers, device manufacturers, and automotive companies select secure and future-proof connectivity solutions critical for smart cities and broader IoT use cases.

Thales' award-winning initiatives and innovations were also highlighted in the interviews. At the 2024 Telco Innovation Awards, Thales received the Platinum award for Best Cellular IoT Initiative with their "IoT Safe" solution, reflecting their advanced capabilities in securing cellular IoT connectivity. Additionally, they won a Gold award for Automotive Connectivity Solutions, demonstrating their strong role in integrating secure IoT communications in connected vehicles, a vital component of smart cities and smart mobility ecosystems.

Thales' dedication to innovation is underscored by their significant investment in research and development. The company invests over €4 billion annually in research and development, focusing on cybersecurity, AI, quantum computing, and cloud technologies.

The interviews also touched upon the regulatory impacts such as the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) and the EU's Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which will reshape IoT security approaches. Furthermore, the discussions covered seamless integration with various connectivity providers for efficient management of large-scale IoT networks and the use of advanced technologies and robust services for providing consistent and reliable connectivity for extensive device fleets.

The interviews explored real-world applications, including automotive and smart metering, optimizing performance and coverage. They also focused on fixed wireless access for 5G home broadband (FWA).

These insights highlight that Thales' best practices in IoT connectivity and security for smart cities revolve around remote, scalable, and secure activation of IoT devices through eSIM technology without physical SIM reliance. Ensuring end-to-end security during remote device provisioning and operation to protect identities and data integrity is another key focus. Integrating their connectivity solutions seamlessly with diverse smart city applications, especially in automotive IoT, is also a priority. Maintaining continuous innovation supported by significant investment in R&D and achieving independent certifications that validate solution security and readiness is another cornerstone of Thales' strategy.

These approaches allow Thales to address the dual challenges of operational efficiency and robust security in rapidly expanding and diverse IoT networks critical for the evolving smart city landscape. The interviews are available for reading after registration. Thales is at the forefront of shaping the future of IoT innovation.
